NHS Frimley Health

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (Frimley Health) was founded in 2014 when Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust acquired two other local Trusts. Frimley Health is now responsible for serving c.900,000 people across Surrey, NW Hampshire, East Berkshire, and South Buckinghamshire.

Value Delivered

  • Seamless migration from old network technology to new Wi-Fi tech, with no impact on workforce.
  • Modern network, providing standardisation across all three hospital sites for the first time.
  • Clinician & consultant access to Epic EPR system from any access point across all three campuses.

Following the acquisitions in 2014, the three Trusts had very different technology stacks, particularly across their networks. An aligned digital strategy was created in 2019 for all three hospitals, including Cloud First and modernising end user devices. Most important were plans for a complete overhaul of their Wi-Fi, which had been prone to multiple black spots and dropped VoIP calls, leading to a poor user experience for both clinicians and patients. Once the new Wi-Fi was in place, Frimley Health intended to deploy a new Electronic Patient Records (EPR) system.

To help implement this strategy, the Trust required a partner who could deliver pervasive Wi-Fi coverage across their various campuses. The Wi-Fi needed to grant clinicians immediate network connectivity, enabling them to access and update patient records at the point of care - anywhere and anytime.

Delivering a healthy new infrastructure which delights clinicians

Frimley Health chose Computacenter to deploy their new infrastructure, and to partner in the decision-making process. We delivered the following solution:

  • Helped the customer look at a set of requirements for their Wi-Fi from both a business and a technical perspective.
  • Conducted cabling and radio frequency surveys to ensure the right access points would be placed in the right location, thereby giving Frimley the density of coverage that they required.
  • Assessed three key network vendors against Frimley’s requirements. Frimley then chose Aruba equipment for their new Wi-Fi network.
  • Designed the new wireless Aruba network, with a new access control solution based on ClearPass.
  • Led the deployment of the new network across all three sites, installing cabling, equipment, and access points.
  • On completion, Frimley designed their new Epic-based EPR around the new Wi-Fi technology.
  • 5-year partnership signed with Computacenter for Wi-Fi network support.

As Aaron Clark, Frimley’s Head of Digital Solutions for IT Infrastructure and Innovation sums up, ‘The technology on the ward is very different now, and the uptake in Wi-Fi at go-live was 100%. The clinicians and consultants are happy, and basic patient observation is now all done by Wi-Fi. So, rather than a nurse having to write down the obs, they’re now automatically fed into the patient record.’

We appreciated Computacenter’s ability to be vendor-agnostic, because we weren’t sure what technology to go for. Also key, was the partner’s ability to provide an end-to-end service, from design through implementation through go-live support.

Why Computacenter?

  • We impressed the customer with our understanding and alignment to their values, processes, and procedures for funding, while they also recognised that we were in this for the long term.
  • We demonstrated market-leading expertise in wireless and access control to support solution assessment and selection.
  • Our ability to leverage our powerful partnerships was key, including the three world-leading network technology vendors that Frimley wished to assess. Our vendor-agnostic approach was vitally important.
  • We have the largest services capability of any VAR in the world and the best understanding of the full technology lifecycle – including Wi-Fi networks.
  • Flexible and agile commercial arrangements.
  • Scalability of project teams.

I think the biggest compliment I could give to Computacenter is, as a partner, which they are now, they align completely with the Trust’s values. They’re committed to excellence, they work together, and they face the future – and that was apparent throughout the project.

Value delivered

  • Delivery of a seamless migration from old network technology to new Wi-Fi technology, with no impact on either the clinical or operational workforces.
  • A brand-new and modern network, providing standardisation across all three hospital sites for the first time.
  • Better tracking of Frimley’s large amount of expensive mobile medical equipment, due to the superior Wi-Fi performance and availability.
  • The clinicians and consultants now have access to the Epic EPR system in a Wi-Fi environment from any access point across all three campuses.
  • Patient-critical information can be wirelessly printed on demand from anywhere across the three hospital sites.
  • Real-time location services enable Frimley Health clinicians to better track devices and beds.
  • One of the key benefits of the Aruba solution is its ability to self-heal. Thanks to the density of access points (AP) that we designed, if one AP goes down, the other APs around that area will boost; no coverage will be lost, and there will be no impact on service. This was a key differentiator for Frimley
